As the sun starts to shine and temperatures rise, it's time to bid farewell to closed shoes and welcome the season of sandals. But before you slip into your favourite pair, it's essential to give your feet some extra care and attention. In this summer foot care guide, we'll walk you through the steps to ensure your feet are not only sandal-ready but also healthy and comfortable for the months ahead.
Step 1: Treat your foot problems
Check your feet daily for cuts, sores, swellings, fungal nail infections, corns or other signs of problems. If you spot any issues, make sure you get them treated- if you don’t, they could end up getting worse.
Step 2: Exfoliation and Cleansing
Start your foot care routine by exfoliating and cleansing your feet. Use a gentle foot scrub or pumice stone to remove dead skin cells and calluses. Gently scrub your heels, the balls of your feet, and your toes. After exfoliation, wash your feet with warm water and mild soap to remove any remaining dirt and sweat.
Step 3: Nail Care
Trim and shape your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails. Use a nail file to smooth the edges. Avoid cutting the corners too deeply, as this can lead to painful ingrown nails. If desired, apply a coat of nail polish for a polished look.
Step 4: Moisturise them daily
It’s not only your face and body that need to be moisturised so they stay in tip-top condition. So do your feet! Start by washing them gently in the shower using warm water, dry them well (even between your toes) then apply a moisturiser. This will help protect your feet from becoming rough or cracked and keep them looking youthful and gorgeous. Avoid getting the moisturiser between your toes as this can worsen any skin problem
Step 5: Apply Sunscreen
We often forget that our feet need to be protected from the sun, just as much as the rest of our bodies. When you’re wearing sandals, they’ll be just as exposed as the rest of your body.
Step 6: Wear Silk and Cotton socks
Materials such as silk and cotton share antibacterial features whilst keeping your feet dry and sweatproof. So when you are ready to wear sandals, your feet remain in a good condition.
When you are at home, continue to wear socks to protect your feet from damage and keep them clean and soft.
Step 7: Avoid tight-fitting shoes
Don’t believe what you hear- your shoes should never hurt your feet. If they do, it’s time to swap your footwear for the sake of your health.
Avoid wearing heels as much as possible because they shift the weight onto the ball of your foot and your toes will absorb the pressure and cause bunions, calluses, pain and even hammer toes. Finally, always remove your shoes when you get home and consider getting inserts to ease the pressure.
Step 8: Wear Toe Bands
